Philosophy and the Academy, 2009
The purpose of this semester’s seminar series, ‘Philosophy and the Academy’, is twofold. We will attempt to bring together students, regardless of their experience with the study of philosophy, to discuss its nuances and challenges. Continuing this inclusive theme, we will explore philosophy’s intersections with other academic fields—psychology, linguistics, and beyond. We will question the extent to which philosophy is indebted to these fields, and conversely the extent to which philosophy perhaps subsumes them as objects of study. The goal will be to bring students of philosophy together with students of other disciplines to discuss myriad issues with the rigor and spirit of ceaseless inquiry upon which philosophy prides itself.
Seminars, consisting of 45 minutes of presentation followed by 45 minutes of discussion, will be conducted every other Tuesday in Maryland 104, from 7:45 to 9:15, lead by a graduate student or faculty member with an expertise in the issue at hand.
Seminar titles will link to a downloadable presentation when applicable.
