Letter from the Editors
On behalf of the staff, we would like to welcome you to the launch of Prometheus, Hopkins Undergraduate Philosophy Journal. Since its inception in 2004, Prometheus has slowly evolved to encompass and reflect the diverse philosophical interests of Hopkins undergraduates. Many students at Johns Hopkins differ in their beliefs and views of the world. The purpose of this journal is to promote philosophic discourse of the highest standard by offering students an opportunity to engage in open discussion, participate in the production and publication of an academic philosophy journal, and to establish a community of aspiring philosophers from all walks of life.
In the online journal, Prometheus publishes many different articles and essays from varying philosophic topics. Some articles highlight the achievements of contemporary philosophers while some analyze and critique on existing philosophies. Whether our writers are pursuing an in-depth analysis of skepticism and epistemology or the philosophical basis of humane treatment, each is profoundly interested in engaging in open discussion for the sake of learning and understanding. We are proud of our writers and staff and hope that you will honor their work with your attention and comments.
Please help Prometheus grow by participating in whatever ways possible. Come to the discussion forums. Get involved in the electronic discussions here. Volunteer your services to help us read and advertise. Most importantly, tell your friends about Prometheus and keep an active mind.
Prometheus would not have been possible without the dedication and support of the Prometheus staff, the Hopkins faculty, and our supportive graduate advisers. We would like to thank the students who contributed to Prometheus either through sharing their experiences, reviewing books, or analyzing philosophic topics. We would also like to thank the Hopkins Student Activities Commission and the Office of Student Involvement for their generous contributions and continued support. Finally, we thank the Hopkins Philosophy Department for supporting us every step of the way.
As always, we welcome your ideas, comments, and questions. May this online journal serve as inspiration for you to examine the world and contribute to the intellectual growth of Hopkins’ undergraduate community.
